AVOIDING TRAVEL SCAMS

There are people scamming everywhere in the world. Sadly, swindlers are always on the hunt of unsuspecting vacationers. There are many travel scams. Below are a few of the most common to be aware of.

Buying something related to your vacation
You may spend hours or even days planning the perfect vacation only to find out that you have purchased an all inclusive trip that does not exist, or even airline tickets that are not real. Or maybe you booked a hotel thinking it was a five star one when in actuality it is a two star hotel. Sounds too crazy to happen, but it does. To avoid any of these scams, only deal with reputable, known travel agencies. If you are looking to book your trip yourself, do lots of research. Sites like Trip Advisor offer plenty of reviews of hotels and resorts by consumers.

Being a victim of crime
The threat of criminal activity is more prominent at certain vacation destinations. Countries like Mexico, Columbia and Jamaica have higher crime rates than areas like Aruba, Puerto Rico, etc.. But, crime exists everywhere and tourists are often considered easy prey. While on vacation it is important that you are alert and aware of your surroundings. There are thieves that will always be lurking in the background, looking for those that are enjoying themselves so much that they are not paying attention. The most common type of scam at vacation spots is pick pocketing and general theft. So always be aware of the people that are around you and your family and make sure you keep your belongings on your person are in a pocket that is not easy to reach into to. Also, no matter if you are relaxing on the beach or on a sightseeing trip, never leave your personal belongings unattended.

Buying fake souvenirs
Counterfeit products is a multi-billion dollar industry. If the price of a designer bag is too good to be true...it probably is. Only buy merchandise from legitimate stores. Don't waste your money at little side shops or any other shady store. And never buy cosmetics or medicine on the streets either. Utilizing knock-off cosmetics or medicinal products can be a major threat to your health.

As mentioned above, if it is too good to be true, it likely is.
